Zygi A General History
Zygi
community is located on the south shores of the island of Cyprus and is
central to three large cities , Nicosia, Larnaca, and Limassol.
The population of the community is about 600 persons,
the majority of whom are refugees from various locations of the northern
area of Cyprus currently occupied by the Turkish army.
|
|
Some years ago Zygi was mainly a commercial centre
rather than a village with permanent residents. Large quantities of carobs were gathered at Zygi from all over Cyprus, they were stored at large warehouses, some of which are still standing today, they were ground in the carob mills and were transported to the pier to be loaded on to ships for export. Carobs were at that time the main source of income for the rural population and went by the name of the “black gold of Cyprus”. |
|
Today there is only one carob company operating in the
community, the Cooperative Carob Marketing Union of Larnaca Ltd. The
company gathers and sells carobs, wheat, barley, and almonds from the
surrounding areas. Many members of the community are now fishermen, fish traders or owners of fish restaurants. Zygi is the most famous fish producing area in Cyprus. Zygi has many professional fishermen and also many amateurs. The major quantities of fish are absorbed by the local fish taverns, and the remainder is sold to the market. |

straight from the fishing boat. |
| All the plans for the marina in Zygi are finished. The pier that is now in Zygi will be demolished and replaced with two new piers and the marina will run 100m each way from the piers. | View Plan |
